Rules
A short summary of the official tournament rules.
- Castling
- The King moves two squares toward a Rook that has not moved, and that Rook hops across — only with the squares between them empty, and never out of, through, or into check.
- En passant
- A pawn that advances two squares and lands alongside an enemy pawn may be captured in passing, on the very next turn only.
- Promotion
- A pawn reaching the far rank must be promoted to a Queen, Rook, Bishop or Knight of its own colour, whether or not that piece has been captured.
- Draws
- A game is drawn by stalemate, insufficient material, threefold repetition, the fifty-move rule, or mutual agreement.
